Story by HP Lovecraft. Although not explicitly a Yellow Mythos story, elements of this story set in New York show distinct parallels to the work of Robert W. Chambers and the colour yellow is associated with supernatural and repugnant elements, e.g. the yellow silk curtains that hide the window through which the aged magician gives the narrator glimpses of tranquil past and cacodaemoniacal future. The basic premise of He is a supernatural meeting between past and present, similar to that in The Demoiselle d'Ys, while the hidden courtyard in which the narrator meets 'him' is one of a "series of detached courtyards; now accessible only through the unlighted hallways of intervening buildings, but once forming parts of a continuous network of picturesque alleys" similar to the Court of The Dragon.
