'The King In Yellow' can refer to several different things within this wiki. Principally, it pertains to the following:
- The King In Yellow (the book) by Robert W. Chambers – this is the volume of real-world fiction that inspired the many imitators who have contributed to the Yellow Mythos.
- Due to the somewhat recursive nature of the fiction (elements from the play-within-the-book seem to manifest within the reality in which the stories are set), some later stories posit that Chambers' work itself exists within the fictional world of the Mythos...
- The King In Yellow (the play) – a fictional drama invented by Chambers and mentioned several times in his stories.
- The King in Yellow himself; or perhaps, rather, itself – a largely unseen character within the fictional play (and appearing elsewhere within the mythos), often assumed to be a powerful, god-like being.
The name also applies to the following categories, however:
- Other fictional plays – some stories incorporate 'forged versions' of the fictional play.
- Reconstructions of the play – some authors have used the brief hints dropped by Chambers in his writing to try to write a complete text of the imagined play. More than one such attempt has thus been published under the actual title of the play.
- Other uses of the title have appeared in fiction that do not directly connect to the above but are arguably within the Mythos.
- Finally there is a page devoted to Kings in Yellow in other fiction, where versions of the King have appeared in other mythologies and unrelated tales.
