The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. Mysterious masked figure, claims to be an angel, lives in a labyrinth, sings, obsessed with decadent art, corrupts innocent actresses. Published in 1909-10, it may well have been inspired by The King In Yellow. The Phantom may have had ties to the Paris Commune.
