Story by Will Murray, published in Rehearsals for Oblivion (Act I). It is named for the non-mythos story, The Purple Emperor by Robert W. Chambers.

The narrator is giving a woman an over-the-phone tarot reading on behalf of Virginia Vrestell's Psychic Readers when a co-worker, Dom, tells them he is writing a book that he plans to call The King In Yellow. The narrator psychically picks up on the original Play and wonders where the ideas flow from.

The narrator then recalls their past life as the writer of the Play and realises that they have returned to prevent its resurgence via Dom. They also realise that they, now, serve The Purple Emperor against "that tatterdemalion pretender", The King In Yellow, "for possession of the Throne of Time/Space."
